Foundation species, biodiversity, and ecological networks
Foundation species such as bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), seagrasses, and blue mussels create habitats that support diverse ecological communities. Through non-trophic interactions, including habitat provision, refuge, substrate creation, and environmental modification, these species can profoundly alter how other organisms interact.
Our research examines how foundation species regulate biodiversity and ecosystem processes by shaping interconnected networks of trophic and non-trophic interactions. We develop and apply quantitative methods to investigate how these multilayer networks influence ecosystem structure and functioning.
We also use Linear Inverse Models to quantify carbon flows through food webs in contrasting coastal habitats, allowing us to compare how foundation species influence carbon processing, retention, and export.
