Temperature variability regulates the interactive effects of warming and pharmaceutical on aquatic ecosystem dynamics
Published in Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2024
Climate warming and pharmaceutical contaminants can jointly affect population dynamics and ecological community structure. Using an empirically informed food-chain model, we investigated how mean temperature, daily temperature variability, and pharmaceutical-induced changes in fish boldness interact to shape aquatic ecosystem dynamics.
Daily mean temperature and high levels of boldness were the primary drivers of community instability. However, temperature variability strongly modified their combined effects, producing outcomes ranging from predator collapse to coexistence characterized by seasonal or interaction-driven population cycles.
